On Sunday February 21, 2020, the National Association of the American African Dance Teachers (NAAADT) will host the 2021 UMFUNDALAI TEACHERS’ CERTIFICATION CEREMONY AND CONCERT. Join us for this virtual event showcasing contemporary African dance works by Mama Kariamu Welsh and other Umfundalai-based choreographers and celebrates the achievement of selected artists who will receive Professional Umfundalai Teaching Certification.

Certification Ceremony - Five artists have studied Umfundalai intensely over the last three years while concurrently teaching Umfundalai under the mentorship of an Mwalimu (Master Teacher). It is a Umfundalai tradition that when an artist's teaching has been endorsed by the Organization of Umfundalai Teachers, he/she/they participates in a ceremony immediately following the intermission of either a Kariamu & Company: Traditions or Umfundalai Streams Concert.  In our current ‘zoomiverse’, the NAAADT is saving the announcement of Umfundalai’s newest teachers until the February 21st ceremony. It is our effort to include an element of authenticity in this highly digital programming that pandemic safety requires.

Umfundalai Concert – The concert of dances that will follow the Certification Ceremony will comprise of classic Umfundalai works performed by Kariamu & Company, choreographies by current Umfumdalai teachers, and a select few by members of our newest cadre of Certified Teachers.
